Scaling an application within the Discord ecosystem to serve over 10 million users across thousands of servers presents extreme infrastructure challenges. The system must process hundreds of thousands of concurrent WebSocket connection messages and gateway events in real time. In addition, tracking invites and verifying users securely is crucial to prevent raid attacks, fake accounts, and spam while maintaining high server uptime and low latency.
We engineered an event-driven Discord bot ecosystem utilizing Node.js and Go for key gateway integrations. We implemented high-throughput WebSocket handlers and an memory-cached invite code system using Redis. The bot employs an advanced anti-abuse verification workflow with CAPTCHA and server entry validation. It scales automatically on Kubernetes clusters, keeping latency under 30ms and providing server administrators with a web-based real-time dashboard of user joins, drop-offs, and custom invite referral campaigns.
